They’re baaaaack. The inmates, that is, are back once again for JAIL BREAK!
Saturday, April 27th marks the escape date and the arrival of a few magical surprises as the inmates have new tricks up their sleeves. This season, fashion designers will show their work and join the ranks inside the jailhouse, where new and veteran artists and comedians are reclaiming the cell walls with their masterpieces. Outside in the courtyard, dancers deliver more spellbinding routines while artisans demonstrate their work in the re-imagined Artisans’ Market.
A fleet of food trucks feed the hungry masses as they indulge in the sweet and savory taste of freedom, and like a pocket full of never-ending scarves, the surprises continue with hypnotizing performances by local talents of the musical stage. The fresh-faced and alternative Brave Baby, rustically eloquent Luke Cunningham, mighty and masterful The Royal Tinfoil, and the soul-breaking song-smith Steven Fiore construct a lineup of epic standards.
Experience this all-encompassing assault of the senses, and enjoy the biggest night for local creatives to come out and represent their art and their community. Houdini couldn’t have planned a greater escape for one magical night in which history and innovation converge.
COMEDY:
Presented by Big Gun Burger Shop
The comedy stage at JAIL BREAK is back by popular demand, and this time the comedians are bringing out the Big Guns. Literally. The Big Gun Comedy Stage, presented by the home of the official JAIL BREAK after-party, Big Gun Burger Shop, will be produced and hosted by Charleston comedy juggernaut Evan Berke.
In his second term at the jail, Berke is bringing with him an incredibly strong line-up that features Charleston’s notorious funny-men and the return of Myles Armstrong Hutto. Hutto worked in collaboration with Berke to co-produce and co-headline a string of sold out shows in Charleston before moving to Chicago in 2011, where he currently resides. He studied at the Second City Theatre and is a founding member of Pierre(!), a sketch and improv group comprised of members from Second City and Improv Olympic. Together, Hutto, Berke and the rest of the comedy crew are setting the stage for the funniest lineup of screwballs since the 2012 Miss America Pageant.
DANCE:
Presented by The Charleston Dance Alliance
Dancers from all over Charleston, of wide-ranging styles, elevate the visual component of JAIL BREAK with their innovative and noteworthy choreography. The dance performances will include a variety of pop-up installations inside the jail, as well as scheduled stage performances outside. Experience the unbound nature of the Charleston dance community at the Holy City site in which they have dominated and delighted inmates since the festival debut.
